The great problem which Plato attempts to solve in his Republic is not the political what, and not so much the why, which is taken for granted, but the how. Now, why do people think that tentative arguments are necessarily someone's .. The tyrant at first (Emerson, 132-153) Making ourselves better improves society, and, Plato might argue, vice versa. As far as the "Republic," I am more sympathetic to the argument that Plato is not describing the just city, but rather demonstrating (ironically) the limits of philosophy through the absurdity of the "philosopher king" and the like.
